Gagosian Beverly Hills opened an exhibition of Cy Twombly’s works, produced during his final decade of life.  Cy Twombly was an American painter (1928-2011), who became one of the most important artists of the Post-war period.

There are few artists as divisive and innovative in the history of art. With a career that spanned decades, Cy Twombly left his mark while subverting classic movements like Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop Art to create something new awaiting discovery around every corner.

His work has been described in many publications as “spare, childlike scribbles” and he doesn’t fit into post-war movements because of this informal style which took him out of step from other artists’ techniques during that time period.

During 1994 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art the curator Kirk Varnedoe wrote: “Cy Twombly was influential among artists, discomfiting to many critics and truculently difficult not just for a broad public, but for sophisticated initiates of postwar art as well.”

The most expensive painting by Cy Twombly ever sold at an auction was a work called Untitled (New York City) (1968) which went for $70.5 million USD in 2015 at Sotheby’s New York sale.
